Mandla Ncikazi has credited discipline, tactical growth and relentless extra work for the rapid rise of Relebohile Mofokeng as Orlando Pirates gear up for a crucial showdown with Kaizer Chiefs.

Pirates head into the high-stakes encounter at FNB Stadium knowing that victory could significantly strengthen their pursuit of the Betway Premiership title. With pressure mounting in the closing stretch of the campaign, Ncikazi has pointed to Mofokeng’s form as a major source of belief within the squad.

The 21-year-old attacker has been central to Pirates’ recent surge, directly contributing to 10 goals in his last five appearances. His influence has kept the Buccaneers firmly in contention alongside Mamelodi Sundowns, who remain their primary rivals in the title race.

Ncikazi, however, insists the youngster’s impact is no coincidence, highlighting the dedication shown away from the spotlight. “I think it’s a number of factors,” he said. “One, the number of hours that are invested in their extra work, the number of preparation that he goes through, not only in the field, the positional changes.”

He further underlined the player’s tactical evolution, noting his growing versatility across attacking roles. “If you see Rele, when he started, he was only playing on the left. Now he can play throughout any positions out of the three 10s.”

According to Ncikazi, improvements in the team’s overall attacking approach have also contributed to unlocking Mofokeng’s potential, particularly in how quickly Pirates transition into dangerous areas and create space for him to operate.

Beyond his technical output, the assistant coach suggested Mofokeng already carries himself like a senior figure within the squad. “The boy is so mature for a youngster, you wouldn’t think somebody his age,” Ncikazi added.
