Kenya Football Federation President Hussein Mohammed suspended by Executive Committee over financial impropriety
A major governance crisis has engulfed the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) after its National Executive Committee (NEC) moved to suspend President Hussein Rashid Mohammed over allegations of financial impropriety, including the misappropriation of KSh 42 million linked to the African Nations Championship (CHAN).
In a resolution passed on April 24, 2026, and signed by nine of the 14 NEC members, the committee ordered Mohammed to step aside alongside Acting General Secretary Dennis Gicheru and NEC member Abdullahi Yussuf Ibrahim to pave the way for investigations into the scandal.
The NEC cited a range of concerns, including alleged theft of funds from CHAN accounts, non-compliant procurement processes, financial mismanagement, and conflict of interest.
The committee further claimed that a majority of its members had been “systematically excluded and sidelined” from executing their duties, in violation of the FKF constitution.
“With immediate effect, Mr Hussein Rashid Mohammed do step aside from his role and position as President of Football Kenya Federation, Mr Abdullahi Yussuf Ibrahim do step aside from his role as nominated member of Football Kenya Federation National Executive Member and Mr Dennis Gicheru will step aside from his position and role as the Acting General Secretary of FKF,” part of the resolution read.
To stabilise the federation, the NEC has directed that Deputy President Macdonald Mariga Wanyama assume the role of Acting FKF President with immediate effect, pending the outcome of investigations and a full forensic audit into the federation’s financial affairs.
Additionally, the committee has ordered the freezing of all FKF bank accounts associated with Hussein Mohammed and called for the appointment of an independent forensic auditor to probe the federation’s finances.
The NEC also emphasised that its written resolution carries the same legal authority as decisions made in a formally convened meeting, in line with provisions of the FKF constitution.
This development throws Kenyan football into fresh uncertainty, with potential implications for governance, sponsorship, and the country’s participation in upcoming competitions, including CHAN.
Neither Mohammed nor the other affected officials had publicly responded to the allegations at the time of publication.
