CAF Champions League: AS FAR challenge kick-off time ahead of final against Mamelodi Sundowns
Tensions are already emerging ahead of the CAF Champions League final between Mamelodi Sundowns and AS FAR, with the Moroccan club reportedly lodging a formal complaint over the proposed kick-off time for the first leg.
AS FAR Rabat, who reached their first-ever final in the competition after eliminating domestic rivals RS Berkane, are set to face Sundowns over two legs scheduled for May 15 in Tshwane and May 24 in Rabat.
According to reports, the South African champions have proposed a 15:00 kick-off for the opening leg at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
However, AS FAR have objected to the timing and have communicated their concerns to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), requesting a later start.
Citing fairness and player welfare, the Moroccan side argues that both teams should compete under balanced conditions, without any perceived advantage linked to weather or timing.
They also believe an early-afternoon kick-off could expose players to extreme heat, conditions they claim would favour Sundowns, who are more accustomed to high temperatures.
The club has instead proposed an 18:00 kick-off, which they consider more suitable for optimal performance and safety. They further insist that playing in midday heat could place unnecessary physical strain on their squad and potentially affect the quality of the contest.
AS FAR are now awaiting CAF’s official decision, which is expected in the coming days, before intensifying preparations for the highly anticipated continental final against Miguel Cardoso’s side, who booked their place by eliminating Tunisian giants Espérance de Tunis.
