Beninese forward Candas Fiogbé shines despite PAS Giannina relegation
PAS Giannina FC have been relegated to the Greek third division following a difficult campaign, despite encouraging performances from Beninese striker Candas Fiogbé.
The club’s fate was confirmed after a 1-0 defeat away to Nestos Chrysoupoli, a result that ended any remaining hopes of survival.
Even before the ninth round of the relegation play-offs, PAS Giannina had been struggling to remain competitive, and the loss sealed their drop.
It marks the conclusion of a challenging season in which the team failed to find consistency or build momentum.
Throughout the campaign, PAS Giannina were unable to reverse their fortunes, ultimately falling short in their battle to stay in the division.
Amid the difficulties, Fiogbé emerged as one of the few positive aspects of the team’s performances.
The 21-year-old forward, who joined in February from the reserve side of Atalanta, made an immediate impact in attack.
In seven appearances, the Beninese striker scored three goals, demonstrating his ability to contribute in front of goal despite limited opportunities.
His performances offered glimpses of potential, even as the team struggled collectively.
However, his progress was interrupted by injury, which kept him out of action for around three weeks.
The setback affected his rhythm during a crucial period of the season, limiting his ability to build further momentum.
Despite these challenges, Fiogbé remained a notable presence in the team’s attacking line, providing moments of quality in an otherwise difficult campaign. His contribution stood out in a side that found it hard to deliver consistent results.
With his contract set to expire on 30 June, his time in Greece appears to be coming to an end.
He is expected to return to Italy to discuss his next steps with Atalanta, as he looks ahead to the next stage of his career following a brief but impactful spell with PAS Giannina.
