Ghana national football team are set to arrange a fifth international friendly as part of their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a change in leadership.

After securing qualification for the tournament to be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) had initially outlined a schedule of four warm-up matches.

Those plans were drawn up under former coach Otto Addo before his dismissal in March.

Addo was relieved of his duties after consecutive heavy defeats, including a 5-1 loss to Austria national team in Vienna and a 2-1 defeat to Germany national team in Stuttgart. The results prompted the GFA to seek a new direction ahead of the global tournament.

Following a search for a replacement, the association appointed experienced Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz on a short-term contract covering the World Cup period, with his performance to be reviewed after the competition.

Queiroz, who has previously managed national teams including Iran, Portugal and Egypt, is expected to bring greater structure and discipline to the Black Stars as they prepare for their fifth appearance at the World Cup finals.

Two friendly fixtures have already been confirmed, with Ghana set to face Mexico national team in May and Wales national team in June.

However, the GFA is working to secure an additional match, believing the current schedule may not provide sufficient time for Queiroz to fully implement his tactical plans.

The new coach is expected to arrive in Ghana this week for his official unveiling, accompanied by members of his technical staff. He will also be formally introduced to the Minister of Sport, Kofi Adams, before taking charge of preparations.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L for the tournament, where they will open their campaign against Panama national team on June 17, before facing England national team and Croatia national team later in the group stage.

The addition of another friendly is seen as part of efforts to strengthen the team’s readiness as they aim to improve on their performances in previous editions.
