Ademola Lookman celebrating goal for Atletico Madrid

Diego Simeone reserved his highest praise for Ademola Lookman after the forward delivered a decisive contribution to send Atletico Madrid into the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, despite a nervy second-leg defeat to Barcelona on Tuesday night.

Barcelona claimed a 2-1 win at the Metropolitano, a contest marked by intensity and a red card for Eric Garcia, but it was not enough to overturn Atletico’s first-leg advantage as the Madrid side progressed 3-2 on aggregate.

The tie unfolded as a tactical battle that tested Atletico’s resilience, with Simeone’s side forced to withstand sustained pressure from a Barcelona team intent on forcing a comeback.

Simeone admitted his team struggled to contain Barcelona’s fluid attacking rhythm at times, acknowledging the impact of their opponent’s tempo and technical quality.

“Did you see how they play? The speed they go at?” he said, reflecting on a contest that threatened to slip beyond Atletico’s control when Barcelona built momentum. Yet he credited his players’ mental strength for regaining composure in crucial moments.

Key figures emerged under pressure, with José María Giménez, Koke, and Marcos Llorente providing leadership, while goalkeeper Juan Musso delivered a composed display.

However, it was Lookman’s influence that proved pivotal, his goal swinging momentum back in Atletico’s favour and ultimately shaping the outcome of the tie.

Simeone was emphatic in his assessment of the Nigerian international’s development and importance.

“Lookman is breathtaking; he has so much more to offer. I saw it with Nigeria, and that’s what I want from him,” he said, underlining both the player’s attacking quality and his growing defensive contribution within the system.

The Argentine coach also pointed to the strategic dimension of the contest, noting how both sides turned to alternative plans as fatigue set in. Atletico’s substitutions injected fresh energy, helping them match Barcelona’s late push.

Having navigated a demanding quarter-final, Simeone now turns his attention to the final stretch of the competition.

“With the enthusiasm of the three remaining matches, with respect and humility, but knowing what we want. And we will go for it,” he said, as Atletico continue their pursuit of a first Champions League title under his leadership.
