Konate moves closer to new Liverpool deal as talks advance
Ibrahima Konaté is edging towards committing his long-term future to Liverpool FC, with negotiations over a new contract gathering momentum after months of uncertainty.
The 26-year-old defender, whose current agreement at Anfield is due to expire at the end of the season, has been locked in discussions with the club for an extended period.
While talks had previously progressed slowly, recent developments suggest a breakthrough is now within reach, raising optimism that Liverpool will retain one of their key defensive figures.
Interest from Real Madrid had earlier cast doubt over Konaté’s future, particularly during a spell of inconsistent performances that drew scrutiny.
However, that external attention has since diminished, allowing Liverpool to regain control of the situation and push forward with renewed confidence in securing the Frenchman’s signature.
According to Fabrice Hawkins of RMC Sport, Konaté is now closer than ever to finalising a new deal. Although a formal agreement has yet to be completed, there is a growing expectation on both sides that an extension will be agreed in the near future.
The proposed contract is believed to span four or five years, underlining Liverpool’s intention to maintain stability in central defence as they plan for the coming seasons.
Further discussions are scheduled to take place after the club’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final second-leg clash against Paris Saint-Germain, a fixture that could prove pivotal both on and off the pitch.
For Liverpool, securing Konaté’s future would represent a significant step in reinforcing their defensive core, while also sending a clear signal of continuity amid ongoing squad planning at Anfield.
