Islam Slimani ends short spell at CFR Cluj early

Algerian striker Islam Slimani has terminated his contract with CFR Cluj just weeks before the end of the season, bringing an abrupt end to a short and troubled spell in Romania.

The club confirmed the departure in an official statement, announcing that both parties had agreed to end their collaboration immediately.

“CFR 1907 Cluj and striker Islam Slimani have reached an agreement regarding the end of their collaboration. (…) We thank him for his work at our club and wish him every success in the future!”

Slimani, who has earned 102 international caps and scored 47 goals for Algeria national football team, joined Cluj in mid-September on a contract running until the end of June.

The move was initially seen as part of his ambition to remain in contention for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, but that objective has since changed, as he was not included in Vladimir Petkovic’s senior plans and instead linked with the A’ national side under Madjid Bougherra for the Arab Cup.

On the pitch, the veteran forward made 16 appearances for Cluj, scoring once and providing two assists. However, his time at the club was overshadowed by off-field issues and growing uncertainty about his future, with his exit widely anticipated since November.

Financial difficulties at Cluj played a central role in the situation. Although Slimani’s reported salary was relatively modest at around €5,000 per month, he is understood to have gone unpaid since his arrival, reflecting the serious economic strain facing the Romanian side.

As the financial situation worsened, tensions also grew between the player and sections of the club’s supporters, some of whom questioned his level of commitment during his brief stay.

Despite the difficulties, the club issued a brief message of thanks following his departure, acknowledging his contribution during a challenging period.

Slimani’s exit now leaves him free to consider his next move as he looks to extend his career at international level and secure regular playing time ahead of future national team competitions.
