Historic Mission: How Queiroz could become only the second coach to reach FIVE World Cups – with Ghana
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially named veteran Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of the Black Stars for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 73-year-old, known for his vast international experience and tactical discipline, replaces Otto Addo, who was dismissed following a string of poor friendly results during the March international window.
The appointment marks a significant shift for the national team as it prepares for the tournament in North America.
Queiroz, a former manager of Real Madrid and assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, begins work immediately with a mandate to lead Ghana through a challenging group stage and potentially deep into the knockout rounds.
A Quest for Football History
By leading Ghana in this edition, Queiroz is poised to become only the second coach in history to manage at five different World Cup tournaments, matching the legendary record held by Bora Milutinović.
Queiroz’s previous appearances on the world stage include leading Portugal (2010) and managing Iran across three consecutive cycles in 2014, 2018, and 2022.
He also successfully guided South Africa through their 2002 qualification campaign, though he did not lead them at the final tournament.
The GFA Executive Council noted that Queiroz’s pedigree was a deciding factor. “Queiroz brings a wealth of experience… he is expected to bring his tactical organization to bear during the World Cup,” the GFA statement confirmed.
Contractual Terms and Objectives
According to reports across Ghanaian media, Queiroz has been handed a short-term contract with a specific performance-based extension clause. If he successfully guides the Black Stars to the World Cup quarter-finals, he will be eligible for a two-year contract extension.
Queiroz described the appointment as more than just a job. “This is not just another job; it is a mission,” he said in his first message to Ghanaian fans via the GFA official portal. “I arrive with respect for its history and belief in its future.”
The Road Ahead in Group L
Ghana faces a rigorous schedule in Group L, with matches spread across Canada and the United States.
The Black Stars will begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in Group L against Panama on Wednesday, June 17, at the Toronto Stadium in Canada, with kick-off scheduled for 11:00 PM GMT.
For their second group match, Ghana will travel to the United States to face England on Tuesday, June 23, at the Gillette Stadium in Boston, starting at 8:00 PM GMT.
The team will conclude their group-stage fixtures on Saturday, June 27, against Croatia at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, which is set for a 9:00 PM GMT start.
Restoring National Pride
The arrival of Queiroz comes at a critical time for Ghana. While the team successfully qualified for its fifth World Cup out of the last six editions, recent form has been a cause for concern. Heavy defeats to Austria (5-1) and Germany in late March led to a crisis of confidence that ultimately cost Otto Addo his position.
GFA officials and fans alike hope that Queiroz’s reputation for building compact, defensively solid teams will stabilize a squad that has struggled with organization. With the tournament kickoff on June 11, 2026, Queiroz has less than two months to finalize his squad and instill his tactical philosophy.
