Orlando Pirates fans alarmed as familiar points tally resurfaces after Richards Bay draw

Concern is beginning to ripple through the Orlando Pirates support base after a revealing statistic surfaced in the wake of Friday’s 2-2 draw against Richards Bay.

While there has been a widespread belief that the Buccaneers have made significant strides this season, the numbers tell a more sobering story.

The stalemate on the road dealt a tangible setback to their title ambitions, particularly with Mamelodi Sundowns still one point ahead and holding a game in hand.

More striking, however, is what the broader data reveals. After 24 matches, Pirates sit on 55 points, precisely the same total they had accumulated at this stage last season.

That symmetry challenges the narrative of marked progress. Twelve months ago, they also had six fixtures remaining and the identical points return. Despite the perception of growth, their position in the title race is not materially stronger.

There are, admittedly, areas of measurable improvement. Pirates have found the net 47 times this term compared to 31 goals at the same juncture last season. Defensively, they have tightened up as well, conceding just 11 goals versus 17 previously.

The result is a vastly superior goal difference of +36, more than double last season’s +17 after 24 games.

Yet that attacking fluency and defensive solidity have not translated into a greater accumulation of points. The critical metric remains wins, and here the contrast is telling.

Last season, Pirates had registered 18 victories, alongside one draw and five defeats. This campaign, they have 17 wins, four draws and three losses. In effect, they have converted potential victories into stalemates.

Sundowns’ own numbers offer additional context. The reigning champions have 56 points from 23 matches, only marginally behind their pace of 58 points at the same stage last season.

Framed that way, the title contest mirrors last year’s trajectory more closely than many might wish, a reality that will leave Pirates supporters uneasy as the run-in approaches.
