Europa League: Moroccan winger Ilias Akhomach stars in Rayo Vallecano’s win over AEK
Moroccan international Ilias Akhomach delivered an outstanding performance in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday, playing a decisive role in Rayo Vallecano’s commanding 3-0 victory over AEK Athens in the first leg of their quarter-final clash.
The young attacker scored once and provided an assist, underlining his growing influence at club level.
Firm Response to Offensive Chants
Following the match, Akhomach addressed recent incidents involving offensive chants directed at Muslims in Spanish football. The issue has gained attention after such chants were reportedly heard during Spain’s friendly against Egypt, as well as ahead of a Champions League fixture involving Atlético Madrid and FC Barcelona.
Speaking to the Spanish outlet AS on the El Larguero programme, Akhomach remained composed in his response to the controversy. “People give offensive chants a lot of importance, but I don’t care and they don’t affect me.”
He added, “When they say it to my face, I will laugh and tell them that they are very nice people.”
Focus Remains on the Return Leg
Despite the emphatic first-leg advantage, Akhomach stressed the importance of maintaining focus ahead of the return fixture in Greece.
“Here the game ended 3-0, but there in Greece we will start from scratch. We must go to win,” he said, urging his teammates not to become complacent.
A Clear Preference for 2030 World Cup Final Venue
Away from club matters, Akhomach also shared his thoughts on the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco will co-host. Despite being born in Spain, the forward made his preference clear when asked about the ideal venue for the final.
“In Morocco, in my country, always,” he said, reaffirming his strong connection to his roots and his desire to see the global showpiece conclude on Moroccan soil.
