Morocco’s World Cup preparations have been dealt a worrying setback after Zakaria Aboukhlal was forced under the knife, casting doubt over his immediate availability ahead of next summer’s tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Morocco national football team head coach Walid Regragui is monitoring the situation closely after midfielder  Aboukhlal suffered a knee problem that required surgical intervention, raising concerns within the Atlas Lions’ camp at a crucial stage of their build-up.

The injury has been confirmed as involving arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. Italian side Torino FC issued a statement noting that the procedure was carried out in Amsterdam by Dr Bas Pijnenburg, with the club’s medical staff present throughout the operation to oversee the process and ensure continuity of care.

According to the club’s update, Aboukhlal has already begun his rehabilitation programme. However, no definitive timeline has been set for his return, with medical assessments expected to continue in the coming weeks as recovery progresses and responses to treatment are evaluated.

The uncertainty presents an unwelcome headache for Regragui, who has been working to finalise his squad structure and tactical plans ahead of the global showpiece.

With the tournament fast approaching, any prolonged absence for a key player could disrupt preparations and force adjustments in selection and balance.

While early rehabilitation signs are encouraging, the absence of a clear recovery schedule means Aboukhlal’s participation in Morocco’s upcoming competitive fixtures remains in doubt, leaving the coaching staff awaiting further medical updates before making firm decisions on his role in the squad.
