Anthonio Rudiger has pointed to avoidable mistakes in possession as the defining factor behind Real Madrid’s 2-1 home defeat to Bayern Munich in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final.

The Spanish giants were punished for lapses in concentration at the Santiago Bernabeu, where Bayern capitalised ruthlessly to seize control of the tie.

Goals from Luis Diaz and Harry Kane handed the visitors a commanding two-goal cushion before Kylian Mbappe reduced the deficit in the second half, offering Madrid a lifeline ahead of the return leg.

Reflecting on the result, Rudiger expressed frustration at how easily his side conceded, suggesting the outcome could have been very different with greater composure.

“We came out in the second half and conceded a goal right away. For me, the two goals we conceded were gifts. I think we need more in the second half,” he said.

The German defender highlighted Madrid’s struggles to protect possession, an issue he revealed had been discussed internally prior to the match.

“We talked about these things, about not losing the ball easily. Look at the two goals. At this level, it’s very dangerous,” Rudiger added, underlining the fine margins that define elite European competition.

Despite the setback, Madrid showed attacking intent after Mbappe’s intervention shifted momentum.

The forward’s goal opened the contest, with both sides creating further opportunities in a high-tempo encounter. However, Bayern’s defensive resilience, anchored by goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, ensured they left Madrid with a narrow advantage.

“I think we need to shoot more on target. Today, Bayern’s best player was the goalkeeper,” Rudiger concluded.
