Youssef Msakni reportedly retires

Esperance Sportive de Tunis legend Youssef Msakni has reportedly decided to retire from professional football, bringing an emotional end to a glittering career.

Msakni, who is the captain of the Tunisian giants has taken the difficult decision after enduring a challenging psychological period, particularly in the wake of his father’s passing.

The news comes at a pivotal time for Espérance, who are preparing for a high-stakes CAF Champions League semi-final clash against Mamelodi Sundowns, having eliminated Al Ahly in the previous round.

Msakni’s reported decision has cast a shadow over the club’s preparations, with fans and teammates grappling with the potential loss of their inspirational leader both on and off the pitch.

Esperance’s management has reportedly expressed full understanding and support for their captain’s decision during this difficult period. The club also paid tribute to his immense contribution, praising his dedication, professionalism, and the success he brought during his time in Tunis.

Msakni only returned to Espérance at the end of last year — 12 years after leaving the club — in what was seen as a romantic homecoming. Having enjoyed a long and successful spell in Qatar, he rejoined on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with Al Arabi SC.

His return was meant to add experience and leadership to the squad, but it now appears it could also mark the final chapter of his career.

Msakni’s journey with Espérance began in 2008 after joining from Stade Tunisien at just 18 years old. Over five years, he made 136 appearances, scoring 48 goals and providing 37 assists — numbers that only tell part of his influence.

During that period, he helped the club secure four Tunisian league titles and famously lifted the CAF Champions League in 2011.

In 2013, Msakni made a record-breaking move to Al Duhail SC (formerly Lekhwiya), where he continued to shine in the Qatari league. He also featured for Al Arabi and had a stint in Europe with KAS Eupen.

While an official confirmation is still awaited, the reported retirement of Youssef Msakni signals the end of an era for Tunisian football and Espérance alike.

If confirmed, the gifted playmaker will be remembered not just for his trophies and statistics, but for his elegance, creativity, and unwavering loyalty to the clubs he served.
