Kompany backs Vinicius to stay authentic after Bayern edge Madrid
Vincent Kompany struck a measured and unexpectedly supportive tone following Bayern Munich’s hard-fought 2-1 victory over Real Madrid in their Champions League quarterfinal first leg, choosing to defend Vinicius Junior amid growing criticism of the Brazilian’s conduct during the match.
Bayern seized a slender advantage at the Santiago Bernabéu on Tuesday night, delivering a disciplined performance that puts them in a strong position ahead of the return fixture in Germany.
Despite the result, much of the post-match conversation in Spain centered on Vinicius, with sections of the local media questioning his on-field behaviour, particularly his reactions to challenges.
Kompany, however, distanced himself from the criticism and instead emphasized the importance of individuality in elite football.
The Bayern coach, who has steadily built a reputation for his composed leadership style, made it clear that he values players who bring personality and edge to the game, even when they represent the opposition.
“Vini must continue to be himself. He has my full support, even if he’s an opponent.
“Sometimes you need profiles like that. We’ve had them too, like Franck Ribéry, and we’ve always appreciated them.”
By referencing Franck Ribéry, Kompany drew a parallel with one of Bayern’s most iconic figures, a player similarly known for his flair and emotional intensity. The comparison underlined his belief that football benefits from characters who can both inspire and provoke, rather than conform to a single behavioural standard.
The Belgian tactician also called for balance in how such players are judged, cautioning against excessive scrutiny in the aftermath of high-stakes encounters.
“Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but without going too far. I respect Vinicius, regardless of the result.”
Kompany’s remarks offered a refreshing counterpoint to the prevailing narrative, shifting focus back toward footballing merit and respect among competitors.
