Eliesse Ben Seghir set for Leverkusen squad return
Eliesse Ben Seghir is on the verge of returning to Bayer Leverkusen’s matchday squad after nearly two months out injured.
Head coach Kasper Hjulmand plans to include the attacking midfielder for Saturday’s home game against Wolfsburg, pending a final check in the last training session.
“Ben Seghir has been in full training for two, three weeks now,” Hjulmand explained at Friday’s press conference, noting the Moroccan’s steady progress. He added that Ben Seghir “is coming back and is ready for the squad” and will “probably” be part of the group to face Wolfsburg, while stopping short of a definitive confirmation before the final session.
Hjulmand also urged patience, stressing that the 21-year-old will need to build up rhythm gradually after his layoff. Ben Seghir has “not played for a very long time” and is “one of seven number tens in the squad,” the coach pointed out, underlining the competition he faces for minutes.
The winger’s last Bundesliga appearance came on Matchday 5, with his most recent start in the second round of the DFB-Pokal, so breaking back into the starting XI will take time.
