Mbappé opens up on African roots, family bonds, and France goal chase ahead of World Cup push

Kylian Mbappé has spoken candidly about his African heritage, revealing a deeper connection to his roots and family as he continues to shine for both Real Madrid and the France.

The enterprising attacker, who has both Cameroon and Algeria roots opted to represent France at the international level and has since won the World Cup.

Speaking on The Bridge Show, the World Cup-winning forward opened up about his upbringing and the cultural influences that shaped him.

“I grew up more on Cameroonian culture than Algerian culture,” Mbappé said. “I was closer to my Cameroonian family.”

However, the 25-year-old explained that his connection to his Algerian heritage has grown stronger over time, as he seeks to better understand both sides of his background.

“But as the years have passed, I have become much closer to my Algerian family,” he added. “And I have a desire to go to Algeria, because I have never visited it before.”

Mbappé also addressed public perception, noting that many people misunderstand his relationship with his roots simply because of where he has or hasn’t visited.

“Everyone thinks I don’t care because I’ve never been there, while I’ve visited Cameroon many times,” he said.

In a light-hearted moment, Mbappé even joked about his dual heritage and international eligibility in a playful exchange about his family.

“I think I will choose to play for Cameroon, and I will send Ethan to play for Algeria,” he said with a smile, referring to his younger brother Ethan Mbappé, who currently plays for Lille OSC.

On the pitch, Mbappé continues to build an extraordinary international legacy. He recently scored in a friendly against Brazil, taking his tally to 56 international goals for France, just one shy of equaling the national record held by Olivier Giroud.

His consistency has been remarkable, with Mbappé also scoring in seven consecutive matches for France—matching the long-standing record set by Jean-Pierre Papin between 1990 and 1991.

Mbappé’s leadership remains central to France’s ambitions as they prepare for the upcoming World Cup, where they have been drawn in Group 9 alongside Senegal, Norway, and Iraq. His experience and goalscoring ability will once again be vital as France aim to go deep in the tournament.
