Football’s world governing body, FIFA, has officially congratulated the Democratic Republic of the Congo on securing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Leopards of the Democratic Republic of Congo ended their 52-year wait to secure a place at the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 with a win against Jamaica 1-0 in the intercontinental playoff final at Akron Stadium in Zapopan, Mexico.

After a goalless 90 minutes, the contest drifted into extra time, where defender Axel Tuanzebe rose to the occasion, converting from a corner in the 100th minute to seal a historic victory.

In a formal letter dated April 1, 2026, and addressed to the Chairperson of the Normalisation Committee of the Congolese Football Association, FIFA expressed its delight at the nation’s achievement, describing the qualification as a “well-deserved success” and a reflection of sustained effort and determination.

The message, signed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Secretary General Mattias Grafström, praised the collective work of players, technical staff, and administrators, while also acknowledging the unwavering support of Congolese fans.

According to the letter, the achievement marks a proud moment in the country’s football history, as the DR Congo prepares to feature on the global stage once again at the expanded 2026 tournament.

FIFA also extended best wishes to the team ahead of the competition, expressing confidence that the nation will represent itself strongly at the finals, while looking forward to further engagement with the country’s football leadership.

The qualification marks a significant milestone for Congolese football, underscoring the country’s growing presence in international competitions and reigniting hopes among supporters for a strong showing at the World Cup.
