Chile overturn deficit to defeat Cape Verde in FIFA Series clash
Cape Verde national football team were beaten 4-2 by Chile national football team after surrendering a first-half lead in an eventful FIFA Series 2026 friendly.
The match saw momentum shift repeatedly, with Cape Verde initially responding well after falling behind before Chile asserted control in the second half to secure victory.
Chile began the game at a high intensity and took an early advantage in the 16th minute through Breton Diaz, setting the tone for a fast-paced contest.
However, Cape Verde responded quickly, drawing level just five minutes later when Livramento found the net to make it 1-1.
The first half remained closely contested, with both sides creating opportunities. As the interval approached, Cape Verde edged ahead, with Cabral finishing a well-worked move in stoppage time (45+3) to give his side a 2-1 lead at the break.
After the restart, the balance of the match shifted. Chile emerged with greater sharpness and gradually began to dominate proceedings. Their pressure paid off in the 58th minute when Gutierrez equalised, bringing the score back to 2-2.
Chile continued to push forward and completed the turnaround in the 67th minute, with Loyola putting them ahead for the first time since the opening stages.
Cape Verde struggled to regain control as the match progressed, finding it difficult to contain Chile’s attacking momentum.
The result was sealed in the 79th minute when Tapia added a fourth goal, capping a controlled second-half performance and confirming Chile’s comeback victory.
For Cape Verde, the defeat highlights areas that require attention as they continue their preparations. They are scheduled to face Finland national football team on 30 March at 03:00 GMT in another FIFA Series fixture.
The upcoming match offers an opportunity for the Blue Sharks to respond and address the issues exposed during the second half against Chile, as they build towards future international competitions, including World Cup qualifying.
