Nathan Ake described Manchester City’s Carabao Cup success as “very special” after their composed 2-0 victory over Arsenal at Wembley on Sunday, a result that signalled a renewed hunger within Pep Guardiola’s evolving squad.

City’s triumph was secured by a decisive second-half burst from emerging talent Nico O’Reilly, whose quickfire double settled a tightly contested final.

The goals provided a clinical edge to a performance built on control and discipline, with City managing the occasion against one of their closest domestic rivals.

For Ake, the victory carried deeper meaning after a rare trophyless campaign last season. “It’s very special. Last season we didn’t win anything so we wanted to win something this season. This was a perfect way to do it against title contenders,” he said.

The defender pointed to a shift in responsibility within the squad, highlighting the blend of experience and emerging talent now shaping City’s identity. With several younger players stepping into prominent roles, Ake acknowledged the growing expectations placed on senior figures to guide the group through demanding moments.

“We are expected to win things, we expect that from ourselves. Last year was disappointing and this year we wanted to do well,” he noted, underlining the internal standards driving the team’s resurgence.

City’s performance at Wembley also served as a statement of intent, particularly in the way their younger players embraced the pressure of a major final. Ake emphasised the collective mentality within the squad, insisting the victory was evidence of a shared belief cultivated through daily work on the training ground.

“We have had ups and downs this season but today we showed even the young players that everyone has the mentality to do good things,” he added.

Beyond the immediate celebrations, Ake views the triumph as a platform rather than a conclusion. “It’s a massive boost. Every title is one you take. This gives a bit of a boost.”
