Mamelodi Sundowns reclaim lead amid intense PSL title battle

Mamelodi Sundowns manager Miguel Cardoso has responded to the presence of rival supporters at his team’s stadium after they returned to the top of the South African Premier Soccer League with a 3-1 win over Marumo Gallants.

The victory at Loftus Versfeld saw Sundowns move back into first place in the standings, as the title race continues to intensify.

The Pretoria-based side now have 50 points from 21 matches, placing them two points ahead of Orlando Pirates.

However, the match was notable not only for the result but also for the atmosphere in the stands. Supporters of Orlando Pirates were present in the stadium, backing Marumo Gallants in the hope that Sundowns would drop points in the race for the title.

Their presence reflected the growing tension surrounding the championship battle, particularly after Pirates had dropped points in their previous fixture.

The unexpected show of support for Gallants added an unusual dynamic to the evening.

Cardoso acknowledged the situation after the match, noting the role played by rival fans in shaping the occasion. “You saw the Pirates fans trying to support the Marumo Gallants. We’ll fight until the end,” he said.

He also spoke positively about the experience, describing it as part of the unique nature of football in South Africa. “It’s normal, it’s even beautiful.

I’ve already said that South Africa offers me so many experiences I’ve never had before, and here’s another one. That’s sport, and it’s also beautiful to see.”

Despite reclaiming top spot, the Sundowns manager was quick to caution against complacency. He stressed that his side must remain focused as the season progresses.

“It’s more comfortable today than yesterday, because the Orlando Pirates had a one-point lead. […] But it’s really not a comfortable position.

If we think that’s the case, we’ll fall into a trap for sure,” he warned.

Attention now turns to continental competition, with Sundowns preparing for the second leg of their CAF Champions League quarter-final against Stade Malien.

Holding a 3-0 advantage from the first leg, the South African side will look to maintain their momentum in the coming days.
