CAF Champions League: Al Ahly captain Mohamed El Shenawy hails team spirit despite Esperance defeat
Al Ahly goalkeeper and captain Mohamed El Shenawy has expressed satisfaction with his outfit performance in the first leg clash against Esperance despite succumbing to a defeat.
The Egyptian giants suffered a 1–0 defeat in the first leg played in Tunisia, leaving the tie delicately poised ahead of the return match next week in Cairo.
Speaking after the match, the Egyptian shot stopper praised his outfit performance, while promising victory in the return clash to secure a place in the semifinals.
El Shenawy told “We played well in the first and second halves, but luck wasn’t on our side. We have a return match in Egypt, and we can make up for it” he told beIN SPORTS:
“The players performed well, the spirit was evident in the match, and everyone accepted the board’s decisions.”
“The next match is very important for us, and we know its importance and the importance of advancing. We will play strongly and give our all in order to win and qualify.”
Esperance of Tunisia defeated Al Ahly 1-0 in the first leg of the quarter-finals of the African Champions League.
Esperance achieved their first victory over Al Ahly in 8 years, specifically in the second leg of the 2018 tournament final when the Tunisian team won 3-0 against the Red Devils.
The return match between the two teams will take place next Saturday at Cairo Stadium, in a match that will be played without spectator.
