CAF Champions League: Mamelodi Sundowns Miguel Cardoso cautious despite convincing first leg win over Stade Malien
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso wants his outfit to stay grounded despite their 3–0 first-leg victory over Stade Malien in the CAF Champions League quarterfinals, warding off talk of semifinals and finals in the competition.
The South African outfit delivered a top-class performance to beat the Malian giants 3-0 on Saturday, giving Sundowns the advantage heading into the return leg in Bamako.
Speaking after the decisive win on Friday night, Cardoso emphasized the importance of focusing on the next fixture rather than celebrating past achievements or projecting future success.
“I think we are very far away from discussing winning whatever in this competition,” Cardoso said. “The only thing we can discuss at the moment is how we are going to play Marumo Gallants F.C. on Tuesday. After that, we think about the Stade Malien match in Mali, and then we need to rest. From there, we think about the rest of the season.”
The Portuguese coach warned that overconfidence could be dangerous, citing the many historic comebacks in football even after significant first-leg results.
“What is important to understand is that 3–0 is just a result. Football history has a lot of comebacks from results like this one. If we don’t go to Mali with a serious approach and a very strong team, with the right mindset, we can have a lot of bad taste in the mouth,” Cardoso added.
Cardoso’s message is clear: Sundowns’ CAF ambitions are still in progress, and discipline, focus, and preparation remain essential. By concentrating on one match at a time, the Sundowns coach hopes to keep his players mentally sharp, ensuring they carry their first-leg advantage into the return leg without underestimating Stade Malien.
With the quarterfinal second leg in Mali looming, Sundowns must balance confidence with caution if they are to advance in Africa’s premier club competition. Cardoso’s disciplined approach reflects his commitment to maintaining focus and instilling a professional mindset in his squad as they chase continental success.
