John Obi Mikel slams Arsenal’s title charge: “They’ve cheated to win the Premier League”
Former Chelsea and Nigeria midfielder John Obi Mikel has sparked a storm with his uncompromising verdict on Arsenal F.C.’s Premier League title pursuit.
In a statement that is already reverberating through football circles, Mikel refused to recognise the Gunners as champions, citing what he called “illegal” tactics.
“I will not recognize Arsenal F.C. as Premier League champions. For me, they have cheated to win the Premier League because, in my opinion, the way they win is illegal,” Mikel told talkSPORTS.
The 36-year-old highlighted Arsenal’s reliance on set pieces, particularly corner kicks, as the main reason for his criticism.
“When I watch Arsenal play right now, they simply rely on corner kicks. For me, every time I see them at a corner or a set piece, what they do is illegal. You can’t do that.”
Mikel went further to describe what he sees as unfair play in the penalty area.
“First of all, they block the goalkeeper, and now they’ve started holding players. When you hold a player, you stop that player from jumping. We don’t want to see things like that in football.”
The former midfielder also questioned the club’s transfer strategy.
“You’ve spent almost a billion pounds, and you want to tell me the only way you can win matches is through corner kicks? That’s ridiculous.”
Arsenal’s title charge has been one of the most talked-about stories of the season, as Mikel’s remarks add fuel to the debate over style versus results in modern football. While some fans argue that exploiting set pieces is a legitimate strategy, others echo Mikel’s concerns about sportsmanship and fair play.
With the Premier League heading into the final stretch, the conversation surrounding Arsenal’s approach is unlikely to die down.
Whether Mikel’s bold claims will be shared by more former stars or dismissed as personal opinion remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the Gunners’ style has left its mark on football discourse, long before the title is officially decided.
