Nigerian youngster Hafiz Ibrahim thriving in France after rejecting Chelsea move
Nigerian forward Hafiz Ibrahim is embracing his rapid development in France, reflecting on the bold decision to turn down a move to Chelsea and join Stade Reims instead.
The 20-year-old, who arrived in August 2024, initially featured for Reims’ reserve side in the Championnat National 3 before quickly making an impact at senior level.
Before his transfer, Ibrahim had the opportunity to join the English Premier League club, even receiving encouragement from former England international Raheem Sterling.
However, the youngster opted for Reims, prioritizing steady growth over immediate glamour. That decision has paid off, with Ibrahim making his senior debut in a 3-1 Coupe de France victory over Mutzig and appearing in Ligue 1 in February 2025 against Rennes.
His breakthrough continued in April, when he started in the Coupe de France semi-final against Cannes, scoring and assisting in a 2-1 win, demonstrating his attacking potential.
Despite his personal progress, Reims could not avoid relegation to Ligue 2, but Ibrahim remains proud of his journey from the dusty streets of Kano to the Stade Auguste Delaune.
“I’m proud to play in Europe,” Ibrahim said at a pre-match press conference. “It was a dream. Everything is happening very quickly in my development, which makes the experience even more exciting. I’m working hard on myself to keep improving, becoming better, and scoring as many goals as possible.”
This season, the forward has netted five goals in 19 Ligue 2 appearances, though injuries have restricted him to only eight starts. He has also registered an assist, won a penalty, and missed six clear chances, highlighting areas for further improvement. Ibrahim insists his focus remains on recovery and growth.
“Injuries are part of football,” he added. “The most important thing is how you come back. You have to maintain the right mentality to get back in shape and help the team. At the club, everyone works hard and we push each other to improve.”
Reims currently sit four points behind second-placed Saint-Etienne, with promotion still attainable despite a recent run of four consecutive 0–0 draws. Ibrahim remains optimistic, stressing patience and effort as keys to turning results around.
He will be eager to find the net again when Reims face Dunkerque on Monday night, aiming to build on his January winner against Saint-Etienne.
