Fikayo Tomori hopeful of earning England recall ahead of 2026 World Cup

Fikayo Tomori remains optimistic about forcing his way back into the England national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite spending much of his time outside the Three Lions setup in recent years.

The defender has developed into one of the most consistent centre-backs in Italian football with AC Milan, playing a key role in the club’s domestic and European campaigns since his move from Chelsea FC.

However, his club form has not translated into regular opportunities with England national football team, where competition for places remains intense.

Despite the limited involvement at international level, Tomori says he remains firmly in contention following recent discussions with England’s manager.

He told The Athletic: “Coach (Thomas) Tuchel and I spoke a few months ago, and he said I’m in the running and that there’s not much to do, just keep moving forward.

“In football and in life, anything can happen. I’m focused on myself, doing my best to help myself, to help Milan. And then, as I said, I hope to be called up.”

The 27-year-old’s performances in Serie A have regularly drawn praise, yet he has struggled to secure a permanent place in England’s defensive rotation.

Still, the former Chelsea academy graduate believes sustained consistency at club level will eventually strengthen his case as England begin shaping their squad for the next World Cup cycle.

Away from the international conversation, Tomori also highlighted the qualities of his Milan teammate Christian Pulisic, insisting the United States captain deserves greater recognition for his impact.

He said of the USA captain: “People underestimate him. People don’t realize how fast he is. They don’t realize how good he is with the ball, how intelligent he is.

“You only realise that when he scores a goal. I knew him from his Chelsea days. Puli is a top-notch professional. A truly top-notch guy.

“He’s always wanting to improve. If he misses a shot in training, he asks himself, ‘Why did I do that?’ But he’s really calm and pleasant to be around; he’s very balanced.

“His goals-per-minute ratio is incredible, and despite the injuries this season, every time he’s been called upon, he’s done his part.

“I know it was frustrating for him to be injured, and it was frustrating for us too because he’s been incredible.”
