Matthieu Epolo has resumed training with Standard Liège after being sidelined since late January with a sprained ankle.

The 28-year-old, who serves as the club’s second-choice goalkeeper, had missed six matches since 1 February.

His return is timely for both club and country, offering reinforcement ahead of the Leopards’ intercontinental playoff final for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Before his injury, Epolo had featured in 22 league matches, recording five clean sheets and conceding 31 goals.

His gradual reintegration into training suggests he may be fully fit for the remainder of the season and ready to contribute in high-stakes fixtures.

“This is positive news for the Leopards,” said a club spokesperson. “Having Matthieu back strengthens the squad and provides confidence ahead of the playoff final against Jamaica or New Caledonia on 31 March.”

Epolo’s return is viewed as an important boost for the national team’s preparations.

His experience and familiarity with major tournaments provide a stabilising presence in goal, while his fitness will allow coach Hector Cuper to plan confidently for the upcoming decisive matches.

At club level, Standard Liège welcomes the return of a reliable goalkeeper capable of guiding the team through the final stages of the domestic campaign.

His leadership and composure are expected to positively influence both defensive organisation and overall squad morale.

With Epolo back in training, both Standard Liège and the Leopards can count on an experienced shot-stopper as they approach critical matches, ensuring depth and stability in goal at a crucial point of the season.
