Lomana LuaLua: Greece move was ‘healing’ after tragic loss of my son
Former Premier League striker Lomana LuaLua has opened up about the profound impact that moving to Greece had on his life and career following the tragic death of his 18-month-old son in 2006.
In a recent interview with World Football Index, the former Portsmouth and Newcastle star revealed that he was “mentally struggling” and under immense pressure in England while grieving.
LuaLua credited then-Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp for recognizing his need for a fresh start away from the English top flight.
“Harry told me he would not sell me to another English club, but he would let me go abroad for a fresh start,” LuaLua said. “That change of environment helped me.”
The Congolese forward joined Olympiacos in August 2007, where he was immediately embraced by the Piraeus faithful. He described the reception as transformative, stating the fans treated him “like a hero” before he even made his debut.
Reflecting on his time in Athens, where he won a domestic double and competed in the Champions League, LuaLua noted that the intense passion of Greek football served as a vital part of his recovery.
“Nothing replaces losing my son, but Greece helped me heal,” LuaLua explained. “The love I received helped me fall in love with football again. It gave me joy again.”
