Algeria Women complete perfect double over Egypt in Cairo
Algeria women’s national football team secured a second successive victory over Egypt women’s national football team in Cairo, completing a flawless two-match series as part of their preparations for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Two days after recording a 3-0 win in the first meeting on 28 February at the Egyptian National Teams Olympic Training Centre, Algeria again emerged victorious on the same ground, this time edging a closely contested encounter 3-2 on Monday.
The match formed part of both sides’ build-up to the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, which has been postponed to a later date.
Algeria made the stronger start and were rewarded in the 34th minute when Mélinne D’Oria opened the scoring, giving the visitors control of proceedings.
Their lead, however, proved short-lived.
Egypt responded three minutes later with an equaliser before moving ahead early in the second half, scoring in the 49th minute to turn the match in their favour.
Facing a deficit for the first time across the two fixtures, Algeria regrouped. Around the hour mark, captain Inès Boutaleb restored parity, bringing her side back into the contest and shifting the momentum once more.
The decisive moment arrived in the 75th minute when Ines Khiri found the net to put Algeria back in front.
This time, there was no response from Egypt, as the Algerians held firm to secure their second win in as many matches.
The two victories provide encouragement for Algeria as they continue preparations for the continental tournament.
Originally scheduled to take place between 17 March and 3 April, the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations was postponed following a request from hosts Morocco.
The Moroccan authorities informed the Confederation of African Football that logistical challenges and pitch constraints made it impossible to stage the competition on the initial dates.
For Algeria, the double success in Cairo represents a timely boost as attention turns to the rescheduled tournament.
