Fecafoot president Samuel Eto'o champions homegrown coaching talent

The president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot), Samuel Eto’o, underscored the importance of investing in local coaching talent.

“When I renewed David Pagou’s contract, he told me: ‘President, that’s a lot [of money]!’ I replied that if the Federation had more resources, I would have given him even more. Because if it’s possible to spend millions of FCFA to pay an incompetent foreign coach, then it’s legitimate to invest billions of FCFA to develop a competent Cameroonian coach,” Eto’o told Digital B Agency in an interview.

The remarks reflect a growing debate in African football about the balance between hiring foreign coaches and nurturing homegrown talent.

By highlighting the value of supporting local professionals, Fecafoot’s president is signaling a shift toward sustainability and long-term development in Cameroon’s football ecosystem.

Observers suggest that this philosophy could not only boost the careers of domestic coaches but also strengthen national teams by rooting expertise in local understanding and culture.

For now, David Pagou’s contract renewal stands as a concrete example of this vision in action, setting a benchmark for future decisions within the Federation.
