Lyle Lakay unveiled by Motsepe Foundation Championship newcomers Hope FC
Former Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United left-back Lyle Lakay has joined Motsepe Foundation Championship newcomers Hope FC, becoming the latest established name to arrive at the club.
The 35-year-old was officially unveiled by Hope on Wednesday after leaving Siwelele FC, where he spent last season. Lakay made 10 appearances for the club but started only two matches.
His arrival continues an ambitious transfer window for Hope, who have made several notable additions as they prepare for life in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
The Cape Town-born defender was welcomed by the club in a statement that highlighted both his local connections and his experience in South African football.
“Welcome home, Lyle. Cape Town boy back in the Mother City,” Hope FC stated on Wednesday.
The club added: “We’re excited to welcome the highly experienced Lyle Lakay to Hope FC.
“A decorated player in South African football and a former PSL Defender of the Season, Lyle brings invaluable experience, leadership and quality to The Immortals.
“We can’t wait to see him in the black and red.
“Welcome to Hope FC, Lyle.”
Lakay has built an extensive career in South African football, having represented some of the country’s most prominent clubs.
He made 162 appearances for Mamelodi Sundowns, while also featuring 109 times for Bloemfontein Celtic. His record includes 70 appearances for SuperSport United and a further 55 matches for Cape Town City.
During his time with Sundowns, Lakay won five PSL titles. He also collected one Nedbank Cup, one MTN8 and one Telkom Knockout Cup.
His experience at the highest level of the domestic game is expected to strengthen a Hope FC squad that is being assembled by the club’s new owners and officials. The side’s recruitment activity has made them one of the more prominent teams in the current Motsepe Foundation Championship transfer window.
Lakay’s move gives the newly established club a player with extensive top-flight experience, a record of winning major domestic honours and familiarity with football in the Mother City.
He will now wear Hope FC’s black and red colours as the club continues to build its squad for the season ahead.
