Mamelodi Sundowns set new PSL home unbeaten record with Gallants victory
Mamelodi Sundowns have established a new Premier Soccer League record after extending their unbeaten home league run to 31 matches with a 2-0 victory over Marumo Gallants.
Sundowns have not lost a home league match since 25 May 2024, when Jaedin Rhodes ended their hopes of completing an unbeaten 2023/24 campaign on the final day of the season.
Their latest success confirmed the record and further strengthened the reputation of Loftus Versfeld and Lucas Moripe Stadium as formidable venues for visiting sides.
The hosts controlled the match from the outset, dominating possession and keeping Marumo Gallants under sustained pressure. Malibongwe Khoza gave Sundowns the lead in the 21st minute, finishing a spell of one-way play against a Gallants side that arrived in Tshwane without a win this season and short of confidence.
Phuti Mohafe’s team struggled to impose themselves as Sundowns dictated the tempo. The home side went into half-time with their advantage intact, although they were forced into a change when Khuliso Mudau suffered an injury and was replaced by Zuko Mdunyelwa.
Sundowns continued to manage the game after the interval and doubled their lead shortly after the hour mark. Cassius Mailula produced a superb finish to complete a convincing victory for Cardoso’s side.
The goal was Mailula’s third in four matches since he returned to the club during the off-season, underlining his immediate impact since rejoining Sundowns.
The result leaves Sundowns unbeaten and in third place, level on points with Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, who occupy second and first respectively.
Their attention now turns to the MTN8, with Sundowns due to host Golden Arrows in the first leg of the semi-final this weekend. The record-breaking home run provides further momentum as they prepare for another important fixture at Loftus Versfeld or Lucas Moripe Stadium.
Sundowns’ latest win also extends a remarkable sequence that began after their defeat by Marumo Gallants on the final day of the 2023/24 season. Since then, they have turned their home grounds into a fortress, with the 2-0 result against Gallants now officially securing their place in PSL record books.
For Gallants, the defeat means they remain without a victory this season. Their difficulties in front of the confident Sundowns side were evident throughout, as they were unable to prevent the hosts from controlling possession, creating the clearer chances and securing another home win.
