Moremi inspires ruthless Orlando Pirates as Kaizer Chiefs crumble in one-sided Soweto Derby
Orlando Pirates delivered a commanding statement in the Betway Premiership title race with a convincing 3-0 victory over arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs in a sold-out Soweto Derby at Soccer City on Saturday, with Tshepang Moremi emerging as the defining figure of a dominant afternoon.
The Buccaneers seized control almost immediately, striking inside five minutes through Moremi, whose willingness to attempt an early effort proved decisive.
His long-range strike appeared routine for Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma before a heavy deflection off Flavio Silva completely altered its path and sent the ball rolling into the net. Fortune played its part, but Pirates’ aggressive start reflected intent and belief from the opening whistle.
The early breakthrough carried historical significance, marking Pirates’ quickest derby goal in 22 years since the late Gift Leremi scored within the opening minute in 2004.
From that moment, Chiefs struggled to regain composure as Pirates dictated tempo, movement and attacking rhythm across midfield and wide areas.
Pirates’ superiority translated into a deserved second goal six minutes before halftime. Relebohile Mofokeng’s intelligent pass released Oswin Appollis inside the penalty area, and the Bafana Bafana winger demonstrated composure rarely seen in similar situations, guiding a precise finish into the far corner rather than opting for power.
With national team coach Hugo Broos observing from the stands, the fluid combination between Mofokeng and Appollis offered encouraging signs ahead of future international assignments.
Chiefs briefly believed they had a route back into the contest following a penalty appeal late in the first half when Deon Hotto challenged Silva inside the box. Replays suggested contact without clarity, leaving referee Eugene Mdluli unmoved. In the absence of Video Assistant Referee technology in the PSL, the decision stood, and with it Chiefs’ fading momentum.
Any lingering uncertainty disappeared in the second half when Pirates added a third. Moremi again played a decisive role, delivering an inviting cross from the left that Evidence Makgopa calmly headed home at the far post, unmarked. The striker’s contribution provided a timely reminder of his value amid increased competition for attacking minutes.
The victory lifts Pirates back to the summit of the Betway Premiership standings, three points ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns, albeit having played a game more. Equally significant is their improved goal difference, which could yet prove decisive in a tightly contested title race.
