Walid Regragui ‘ready to leave’ Morocco role if successor guaranteed

Former Wydad AC captain Yahya Jabrane has expressed unwavering support for Morocco head coach Walid Regragui, amid speculations about his future.

Regragui, who led the Morocco to a historic semifinal finish at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, faced disappointment last January after losing the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title to Senegal in a fiercely contested final at the Prince Moulay Stadium.

Following the AFCON final disappointment, reports emerged that the Royal Moroccan Football Federation and Regragui had parted ways, just months before the global tournament set to take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

However, the Moroccan FA quickly dismissed such claims, reaffirming that Regragui remains at the helm of the Atlas Lions.

Speaking to Emirates Today, Jabrane, who currently plays for Ajman Club, praised Regragui’s leadership and emphasized the importance of continuity ahead of the World Cup.

“Regragui is one of the great coaches who have contributed a lot to Moroccan football,” Jabrane said. “Keeping Regragui is in Morocco’s best interest, and he can repeat the achievement that was accomplished in the 2022 Qatar World Cup by finishing fourth.”

The former Wydad captain highlighted the coach’s tactical acumen, discipline, and ability to inspire players, qualities he believes are crucial as Morocco prepares for football’s biggest stage.

Jabrane also hinted at a possible return to the national team ahead of the 2026 tournament, demonstrating his readiness to contribute whenever called upon.

“I support Regragui until death, and I am ready to serve my national team at any time,” he added, signaling both loyalty and commitment to Morocco’s cause.

With Regragui’s position now reaffirmed and key players like Jabrane offering their backing, the Atlas Lions appear focused on regrouping and building momentum ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
