Jorge Vilda targets final as Morocco step up preparations for 2026 WAFCON at home
Morocco women’s national team coach Jorge Vilda Rodríguez has set an ambitious tone ahead of the upcoming 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, expressing confidence that the Atlas Lionesses possess the focus and determination required to reach the tournament final.
As preparations gather momentum, Morocco have intensified their training programme during the current camp, with the technical staff placing equal emphasis on physical conditioning and tactical refinement.
Speaking during a training session at the Municipal Stadium ahead of Friday’s international friendly against Burkina Faso women’s national football team, Vilda highlighted the commitment shown by his squad as they build toward continental competition.
“The players are working hard, and the training sessions are intense, not only on the pitch but also in the gym,” he said, underlining the demanding nature of the preparations.
The Spanish tactician described the atmosphere within camp as highly encouraging, pointing to a group driven by concentration and enthusiasm. Morocco’s upcoming friendly matches against Burkina Faso are viewed internally as critical rehearsal opportunities rather than routine fixtures, offering a chance to test tactical systems against qualified opposition before the tournament begins.
Captain Ghizlane Chebbak acknowledged the challenge awaiting the team, noting that facing another side bound for the continental finals provides valuable competitive exposure. The fixtures are expected to help Morocco measure progress while strengthening cohesion within a squad blending experience with emerging talent.
Midfielder Hanane Ait El Haj emphasised that preparations have unfolded under positive conditions, with attention directed toward fine tactical details aimed at ensuring peak readiness. She also credited the support structures put in place by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, which has facilitated optimal training conditions throughout the camp.
Morocco recently assembled at the Mohammed VI Football Complex, where a 32-player squad continues to undergo intensive preparation for upcoming assignments, led by the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) is scheduled to take place from 17 March to 3 April 2026 in Morocco.
