Rulani Mokwena emerges as favourite to be named Al Ittihad SC head coach
MC Alger’s Rulani Mokwena has emerged as a frontrunner for the head coach position at Libyan powerhouse Al Ittihad SC.
The club announced the departure of Tunisian coach Khaled Ben Yahia on Tuesday evening.
Speaking to WinWin, Al Ittihad CEO Abdulmajid Saleh said the decision to part ways was mutual, despite some positive results on the pitch.
“The club’s management decided to end the contract with the Tunisian coach by mutual agreement, despite the positive results.
“However, the team’s performances under him did not meet the ambitions of the board and its large fanbase.
“We encountered no difficulty in terminating the contract with the well-mannered coach, as his deal was due to expire in four months’ time. We thank him for the period he spent leading the technical staff.”
Saleh confirmed that the club has begun evaluating several candidates for the role, with Mokwena among those in discussions.
“We have begun talks with a number of candidates to take over the technical role, including South African coach Rulani Mokwena.
“At present, Moaz Abboud has taken charge of the team until the new coach arrives.”
Al Ittihad recently bolstered their squad with the signing of South African midfielder Thembinkosi Lorch.
