Algeria offer Vladimir Petkovic extension in bid for long-term stability

Algeria’s football authorities have moved to secure the future of head coach Vladimir Petkovic by offering him a contract extension until 2028, three months before his current deal is due to expire.

According to sources, the proposal was presented by the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) during the FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour by Coca-Cola on 8 and 9 February.

The timing of the offer underlines the federation’s determination to prioritise continuity at the helm of the national team.

The move sends a clear message that the upcoming World Cup will not define Petkovic’s future.

Whether the campaign proves successful or disappointing, officials appear intent on maintaining stability and shielding the coach from potential approaches once the global tournament concludes.

Coaching markets traditionally become highly active after a World Cup, with national federations and clubs seeking new appointments.

By acting early, the FAF aims to remove uncertainty and avoid the risk of losing its current manager amid increased competition.

Petkovic, the Bosnian-Swiss coach, is regarded within the federation as having met expectations since taking charge.

Under his leadership, the squad has stabilised and the atmosphere surrounding the national team has reportedly improved.

After two turbulent Africa Cup of Nations campaigns, the coach is credited with restoring a sense of order and calm.

The extension offer is also viewed as the starting point of a broader medium-term project, with attention turning to qualification and preparation for the 2027 and 2028 Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

The federation’s ambitions are expected to rise, and contractual discussions are likely to reflect those objectives.

The final decision now rests with Petkovic. Should he accept the terms, an official signing could take place during the next training camp in March.

By tabling the proposal well in advance, the Algerian Football Federation has made its position clear: stability is the cornerstone of its strategy for the years ahead.
