Franco-Senegalese coach Habib Beye reveals Marseille ambition
Franco-Senegalese tactician Habib Beye is aiming to build a formidable team capable of competing domestically and internationally.
Beye returns to the French giants as a manager this time, having featured for the club during his playing day, where he rose to become captain of the team.
The former Stade Rennes tactician replaces Italian gaffer Roberto De Zerbi, who was shown the exit door after humiliating defeat to Paris Saint Germain.
Beye begins Marseille on Friday night, as his outfit takes on Brest in a highly competitive French Ligue 1 clash.
“I think that when you have these kinds of players with the quality that they possess, we need to strive to be a team that is vertical and dominant,” Beye said. “There has been good work done before by Roberto De Zerbi, but it came with both positive and negative fluctuations.”
The 46-year-old was careful not to criticize his predecessor, instead focusing on the identity he wants his Marseille side to embody.
“I’m not here to judge what came before,” he added. “But what is certain is that the football has to reflect what this city is and what the stadium generates. The supporters are lovers of OM and lovers of football. We have to understand the identity of the club, its values, and what the club and the city exude. Maybe I have a head start in that respect.”
With expectations sky-high and little room for error, Beye’s tenure begins under intense scrutiny. His promise of a dominant, attacking Marseille may resonate strongly with supporters—but delivering results quickly will be the true test of his new era at the Vélodrome.
