Al Ahly coach Jess Thorup praises team after narrow win over El Gouna

Al Ahly coach Jess Thorup expressed his delight following his team’s 1-0 victory over El Gouna in the Premier League, highlighting the strength of his goalkeeping roster.

The Reds secured the win on Thursday evening at Cairo Stadium during the 18th round of the league, keeping their hopes alive in a tightly contested title race.

“After the Champions League stage, it was crucial to refocus on the league,” Thorup said in a post-match press conference. “We have five matches left, and this victory is an important step forward. While we missed some chances that could have extended the scoreline, the defensive performance and keeping a clean sheet were outstanding.”

The Danish coach added that El Gouna, despite being a capable side, failed to create clear opportunities. “They rely on second balls and set pieces, but we handled it well,” he said. “We managed the match, created attacking momentum, and earned the points we needed.”

Thorup also addressed the strikers’ struggle to convert chances. “Our main striker has scored just once in eight matches, so we must work on finishing. Marwan Osman missed a chance, Camus missed several, and we are focusing on helping them optimize their opportunities. Any team would want a striker capable of scoring 15 goals in a season, and we hope to reach that level.”

On the topic of goalkeeping, Thorup revealed his strategy for rotation. “I have two of the best goalkeepers in Egypt, plus four strong options overall. There’s healthy competition among them. I pick the most suitable goalkeeper for each match, and yes, I rotate the position. For now, decisions remain between me and the goalkeepers.”

The victory moves Al Ahly to second place with 33 points, just two behind league leaders Ceramica Cleopatra FC.
