Ghana legend Andre Ayew insists retirement is not on his mind despite advancing age
Former Ghana captain Andre Ayew has firmly dismissed speculation that he is contemplating retirement from professional football, insisting that he still feels physically and mentally ready to compete at a high level.
The 36-year-old striker joined Dutch side NAC Breda during the winter transfer window after several months without a club.
Ayew’s contract with French side Le Havre expired last summer, and he spent the intervening period training with Nania FC in Ghana before making the move to the Eredivisie.
Speaking to ESPN NL, Ayew emphasized that retirement is not a concern at this stage of his career. “I never thought about it because my body is good,” he said. “I feel good, I live my life day to day so I prepare myself every time to have a better tomorrow on the field and off the field.”
The former Swansea City, West Ham United, and Nottingham Forest forward boasts a decorated career spanning more than a decade in top-flight European football, alongside extensive service with the Ghana national team. Despite his experience, Ayew prefers to focus on the present rather than plan for the future.
“I don’t think about that,” he added. “When the moment comes, your body will tell you.”
Ayew’s remarks have sparked debate among Ghanaian fans, with opinions divided over whether the veteran should be considered for a place in the 2026 World Cup squad.
While age and recent inactivity are factors, supporters argue his experience and leadership could be invaluable for the Black Stars.
Currently on a six-month contract with NAC Breda, Ayew has appeared in six league matches, primarily tasked with helping the club avoid relegation.
Breda sits 16th in the Eredivisie table, four points from safety, following a crucial 1-0 victory over fellow strugglers Hercules last weekend.
