Raphael Onyedika absence forces Club Brugge rethink before Atlético Madrid clash
Club Brugge KV must travel to face Atlético Madrid without midfielder Raphael Onyedika, a major setback after the sides drew 3-3 in the first leg.
The Nigerian was instrumental in the opening encounter at the Jan Breydel Stadium, scoring once and providing an assist in a performance that shaped Brugge’s result.
His absence for the decisive return fixture leaves the Belgian side short of one of its most influential players in midfield.
Former Belgium international Marc Degryse believes the impact could be considerable.
Speaking to Het Laatste Nieuws, he said: “Club Brugge will feel Onyedika’s absence. Ivan Leko will have to do some searching.”
For head coach Ivan Leko, the challenge now centres on replacing a player who offered both defensive stability and attacking contribution.
Onyedika’s performance in the first match combined energy, positioning and forward movement, attributes that are not easily replicated within the squad.
One potential solution discussed has been adjusting the role of Aleksandar Stanković by moving him deeper into a holding midfield position.
Degryse suggested the change could help maintain structure while preserving passing quality.
“I think we can easily move him back a bit,” he said.
He also warned of the trade-off such a switch might bring: “Admittedly, Stankovic is a little weaker defensively than Onyedika. But he’s comfortable on the ball and can dictate the play.”
That tactical decision could alter the balance of the team, shifting emphasis toward control in possession rather than defensive security.
Against a side regarded as one of the sternest tests in European competition, Brugge’s midfield organisation may prove decisive.
The second leg therefore presents not only a demanding away fixture but also a strategic puzzle for Leko, as Brugge attempt to compensate for the absence of the player who shaped the opening draw.
