Ebenezer Ofori: Ghanaian defensive midfielder linked with move to Iraqs Mosul SC

Ebenezer Ofori has completed a move from Lithuanian side FK Žalgiris Vilnius to Iraqi club Mosul SC on a free transfer, signing a deal that runs from 2026-02-06 to 2027-06-30. The Ghanaian defensive midfielder joins the Iraq Stars League outfit with a current market value listed at €150k, ending his stint in the Lithuanian Toplyga to embark on a new chapter in Iraq.

The transfer sees Mosul SC add an experienced midfield anchor to their squad without paying a fee, while Žalgiris lose a player who had been part of their set-up since 2025-03-28. Ofori, 30, arrives as a specialist in the defensive midfield role and will be expected to bring structure, ball-winning and distribution in front of the back line as Mosul look to strengthen their spine for upcoming domestic campaigns.

Born in Kumasi, the left-footed midfielder has built a career across several countries and leagues. After emerging at New Edubiase United in Ghana, he first moved abroad to AIK in Sweden, where his performances saw his market value rise steadily and laid the foundation for his European career. A subsequent transfer to VfB Stuttgart in Germany followed, before a loan spell at New York City FC in the United States gave him exposure in Major League Soccer. He later returned to AIK, then moved to Danish side Vejle Boldklub, before his more recent stops at Žalgiris and now Mosul SC.

Over the years, Ofori has accumulated experience in the Swedish Allsvenskan, Germany’s system via Stuttgart, MLS in the USA, Denmark’s Superliga environment with Vejle, Lithuania’s Toplyga with Žalgiris, and now steps into the Iraq Stars League. That breadth of competition history positions him as one of the more travelled Ghanaian midfielders of his generation, even as his market value has gradually declined from early peaks to the current €150k.

At 1.72 m, he has typically been deployed as a holding midfielder, tasked with shielding the defence, recycling possession and offering passing lanes under pressure. The transfer history shows several free moves and loan deals, underlining how clubs have repeatedly viewed him as a low-risk, plug-and-play option in central midfield. His spell without a club before joining Žalgiris also highlights how he has had to rebuild his career at times, responding with enough consistency to secure yet another contract abroad.

The move to Mosul SC keeps him outside his home country rather than returning to Ghanaian domestic football. Having already played in Europe and North America, Iraq represents a different tactical and cultural environment, but also another opportunity to prolong a career that has spanned more than a decade at professional level. If he settles quickly and re-establishes his influence at the base of midfield, this stint in the Iraq Stars League could become a valuable late-career platform, either to secure an extended stay in Iraq or to position himself for one final move before his contract with Mosul SC expires on 2027-06-30.
