Liverpool’s transfer plans have been abruptly reshaped by injury, with the club now exploring emergency right-back solutions after Jeremie Frimpong was ruled out.

What had been a relatively settled strategy for the closing days of the window has turned into a delicate balancing act, as the Reds weigh the need for immediate cover against their long-standing resistance to short-term fixes.

Frimpong’s setback could not have come at a worse time. Conor Bradley is already sidelined after picking up an injury against Arsenal, leaving Liverpool suddenly exposed in a position that had not been prioritised for reinforcement this winter. With two natural options unavailable, the issue has become urgent rather than theoretical.

Senior figures at Anfield met on Thursday to assess the situation and agree on next steps. The conclusion was clear: the club must at least explore the market. A shortlist of attainable right-backs has been drawn up, with Liverpool open to moving quickly if the right opportunity presents itself. Sources suggest there are several players under consideration, but caution remains the guiding principle.

Liverpool are determined to avoid a panic signing. Although agents have begun offering players capable of providing short-term cover, the recruitment team are relying heavily on internal data and performance analysis to ensure any addition fits the club’s tactical and physical demands. The emphasis is on suitability as much as availability.

Within the squad, Dominik Szoboszlai is regarded as a viable emergency option at right-back, having the athleticism and discipline to fill in if required. However, this is seen as a stopgap rather than a solution the coaching staff wish to lean on for an extended period.

Until recently, Liverpool had no intention of entering the market for a defender at this stage of the window. While a centre-back remains a recognised area for future investment, that issue is expected to be addressed in the summer, with Micky van de Ven among the names long admired by the club.

For now, the injuries to Frimpong and Bradley have created an unexpected dilemma. Liverpool may yet act before the deadline, but only if they are convinced the player represents the right balance of quality, fit and long-term sense.
