Calm restored in Durban ahead of MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns
There were no disruptions around Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, with Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns preparing to contest the MTN8 final in Durban.
The match is taking place after a tense few days in the city, where anti-immigration protests resulted in damage to property.
Concerns had been raised that protesters might target the fixture, but the area around the stadium remained calm with about three hours to go before kick-off. Security personnel were clearly visible and deployed around the venue.
By 3pm, supporters had begun entering Moses Mabhida Stadium for the eagerly anticipated final.
The Buccaneers are facing the Brazilians in a match expected to draw thousands of football fans to the Durban venue.
On Friday, the eThekwini municipality said it had made preparations for a well-coordinated event and was ready to welcome and protect those attending.
“Hosting the MTN8 final is a proud moment for Durban and a significant boost for our local economy. Events of this scale drive tourism, support local businesses and affirm our city’s standing as a world-class events destination,” city manager Musa Mbhele said.
The municipality’s comments came as authorities prepared for increased activity around the stadium and sought to ensure the final could proceed safely.
