Italians giants, AC Milan, have taken a significant step in their pursuit of France international of DR Congo descent, Jean-Philippe Mateta after reportedly reaching an agreement with the 28-year-old on personal terms.
The Rossoneri are keen to strengthen their attacking options and have identified Mateta as a key target, but the move now hinges on negotiations with Crystal Palace.
According to reports, the Premier League outfit are reluctant to part ways with the striker in the current January transfer window, viewing him as an important figure in their plans for the remainder of the season.
Milan are expected to return for Mateta in the summer should a move for the attacker fell through in this window. The London club had placed a €40 million release clause on the Frenchman, although it remains unclear whether Milan have been able to push for a reduced fee.
Mateta has been a regular presence for Crystal Palace this season, featuring in 34 matches across all competitions. He has contributed 10 goals and two assists, underlining his value to the squad.
With his contract running until the summer of 2027, Palace are under no immediate pressure to sell, giving them a strong negotiating position as interest from Milan continues to grow.
