The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations wrapped up last week in Rabat with Senegal crowned champions after a dramatic final against hosts Morocco.

The Teranga Lions edged a tense encounter 1–0 in extra time, with Pape Gueye netting the decisive goal. The breakthrough came moments after Morocco’s Brahim Diaz saw his audacious panenka penalty saved by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, a turning point that swung the contest in Senegal’s favour.

While Senegal lifted the trophy, Nigeria also stood out for their commanding performances throughout the tournament.

The Super Eagles finished third but dominated several key statistics, emerging as the team with the most victories after recording five wins. They were also the competition’s most prolific scorers, contributing 14 of the tournament’s total 121 goals, and posting the highest average possession at 66 per cent.

At the other end of the spectrum, Mozambique conceded the most goals, shipping nine over the course of the tournament. Defensively, Senegal, Morocco, Comoros and DR Congo proved the most resilient sides, each allowing just two goals.

Senegal topped the charts for ball circulation, completing a tournament-high 3,562 passes, while both Senegal and Morocco recorded the most shots attempted, with 108 each.

Egypt were flagged offside more than any other team, while Senegal and Morocco also led the way in clean sheets, keeping five apiece. Morocco and Mali were the most efficient from the spot, converting three penalties each.

Despite their success, Senegal also featured prominently in the discipline charts. The champions collected 17 yellow cards and one red card, making them the most penalised team at the tournament.

Overall, the 2025 AFCON saw referees issue 210 yellow cards and nine red cards across all matches.

The tournament concluded as a showcase of attacking flair, tactical discipline and fine margins, with Senegal ultimately standing tallest after a memorable edition of Africa’s premier football competition.
