King Mohammed VI of Morocco has sent a message of gratitude to the Moroccan people for their role in ensuring the success of the Africa Cup of Nations tournament, despite the controversy that surrounded the final.
Senegal were crowned champions of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after edging hosts Morocco 1-0 in extra time, following a goalless draw at the end of regulation time last Sunday.
The final was marred by unprecedented scenes, as Senegalese players briefly withdrew from the pitch after a penalty was awarded to Morocco, before later returning to complete the match.
Morocco had been hoping to reclaim the continental title, which has eluded the Atlas Lions since their historic triumph in 1976. The disappointment of the result was compounded by the tense atmosphere that characterised the closing stages of the tournament.
In a message published by the Maghreb Arab Press Agency, King Mohammed VI addressed the events surrounding the final and called for calm and unity.
He affirmed that the bonds of African brotherhood would ultimately prevail once emotions and passions subside, despite what he described as unfortunate incidents during the climax of the competition.
The Moroccan monarch also stressed that hostile schemes would never achieve their objectives, even in the face of defamation and attempts to undermine credibility. He underlined the Moroccan people’s ability to distinguish between situations and rejected any calls for hatred or division.
“The Kingdom of Morocco was and will remain a great African country, faithful to the spirit of brotherhood, solidarity and respect.”
