Moroccan midfielder Bilal El Khannous has delivered an emotional message following the Atlas Lions’ heartbreaking defeat to Senegal in the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The 21-year-old admitted it has been difficult to relive the decisive moments of the match but believes the painful experience will fuel Morocco’s determination to return stronger.

In a post shared on Instagram, El Khannous expressed gratitude to Morocco’s leadership and pride in representing his country on home soil.

“It is hard to find the words in such moments,” he wrote. “I want to thank His Majesty for the tremendous work done over the years for Moroccan football, and for organizing this edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, which was the most beautiful in the history of the competition. It was a great honor and pride to defend my country’s colors during this tournament.”

Reflecting on the team’s journey, the midfielder highlighted the unity within the squad throughout the month-long campaign.

“We lived together for a whole month, full of wonderful moments, like one family,” he added. “Thanks to the coach, his staff, and all the silent soldiers who worked with us. We gave everything we had until the very last minute.”

El Khannous ended his message on a note of resilience, thanking Moroccan supporters for their unwavering backing.

“Watching the clips is painful, of course, but it will make us stronger and more determined in the future,” he said. “Thank you to all Moroccans for your support from the beginning to the end. I am forever proud to be Moroccan and proud to wear my country’s colors. God, Homeland, King… Dima Maghrib.”

Morocco’s defeat followed a dramatic and chaotic final played in Rabat. The hosts were awarded a penalty after VAR confirmed a foul on Brahim Diaz, a decision that sparked furious protests from Senegal’s players and technical staff.

However, after 18 minutes of protest, the game resumed, but Diaz’s panenka attempt was saved by Edouard Mendy but Pape Gueye scored as the Ternaga Lions secured their second AFCON title.

The scenes drew widespread condemnation from both CAF and FIFA, who have since released statements criticising the conduct of Senegal’s players and supporters, describing the incidents as damaging to the image of African football.
