Senegal legend El Hadji Diouf has thrown his weight behind the Teranga Lions ahead of tonight’s Africa Cup of Nations final against hosts Morocco, expressing strong belief in the quality, mentality, and experience of the squad.
The Atlas Lions and the Lions of Teranga will lock horns in the highly anticipated final at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, with continental glory at stake.
Speaking ahead of the game, Diouf said Senegal’s status as one of Africa’s leading football nations makes them a target for every opponent.
“Everyone wants to beat us — whether in a friendly, the Africa Cup of Nations, or the World Cup — because we are at the top and we have the best players,” he said. “I told the players to keep playing their football and enjoy the final. You don’t know when you will get this opportunity again.”
The former Liverpool and Bolton striker also played down concerns about the expected hostile atmosphere in Rabat. “I am not afraid of the crowd. If we could win in Kinshasa, we can win anywhere,” Diouf noted, recalling Senegal’s resilience in difficult environments.
Diouf pointed to the team’s growing experience on the global stage, referencing high-profile matches against elite opposition.
“We love this type of game. Remember our matches against Brazil and England. These young players are used to playing at the highest level, and those details make the difference,” he stressed.
He further highlighted the depth and composure within the Senegalese camp.
“We have a team that is exceptionally calm and intimidating. Our talent is frightening. Just look at our bench — it’s like a completely different team,” Diouf added.
The Senegal icon concluded by insisting the team’s focus remains firmly on football. “We will only talk about football. We will play football and continue to entertain on the pitch.”
Senegal reached the final after edging Egypt 1-0, while Morocco booked their place following a penalty shootout victory over Nigeria.
Congolese referee Jean-Jacques Ndala has been appointed to officiate the final scheduled for 19:00 GMT.
