Goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir delivered an eye catching performance for Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations third place match against Nigeria, piling pressure on regular number one Mohamed El Shenawy with his numbers.
The young Al Ahly stopper started the game, kept a clean sheet in a 0–0 draw and only lost out 4–2 on penalties.
It was Shobeir’s second start at AFCON 2025, and his second clean sheet, after also shutting out Angola in a goalless group stage encounter. By contrast, El Shenawy managed just one clean sheet across five appearances at this tournament, inviting comparison between the two keepers.
Statistically, Shobeir was outstanding against Nigeria. He earned the highest rating of 8.0 from data site Sofascore, making four saves in normal time and stopping one spot kick in the shootout.
He also produced two successful punches, one high claim, a perfect 100% success rate on coming off his line in two interventions and cleared four dangerous balls, underlining a composed and decisive display that strengthens his case for more regular national team opportunities.
